The Weinstein Company picks up 'Lay the Favorite'

According to reports, The Weinstein Company has made its only acquisition at this years Sundance Film Festival. By paying more than $2 million (US dollars) for the movie 'Lay the Favorite', with plans to release it both theatrically and on VOD (Video on Demand). The movie by British director Stephen Frears, who monday night presented John Hurt with the Alexander Walker Special Award at the 39th London Evening Standard British Film Awards, stars Rebecca Hall, Bruce Willis and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Produced by Anthony Bregman, Randall Emmett, George Furla, Paul Trijbits and D.V. DeVincentis who also wrote the screenplay which has been based on the original memoirs by Beth Raymer. It tells the story of a Florida stripper who moves to Las Vegas to find her fame, where she meets Dink (Bruce Willis), an oddsmaker who introduces her to the world of sports betting.
